CONSTIPATION / DIARRHEA
Constipation / Diarrhea Treatment from your Chiropractor in Omaha - Diamond Chiropractic
Feeling bloated? Nauseous? How about the urgent need to go to the bathroom more often? Or the opposite? Maybe you’re feeling like everything didn’t come out yet. If you answered yes to any of these statements, more than likely, you are experiencing constipation and/or diarrhea.
Constipation and diarrhea are common conditions for multiple people. Both conditions are, usually, not serious, and they can subside after a few days. Regardless, it is important to focus on one’s overall health, as well as finding relief.
Our team at Diamond Chiropractic is exceptional when it comes to constipation/diarrhea. Whether if you have had this condition for a while now, and it is getting worse (known as chronic), or it just appeared suddenly (known as acute), our Chiropractor in Omaha has the answer and treatment for you.
Constipation vs. Diarrhea
Constipation occurs when a patient experiences infrequent bowel movement, or it becomes difficult to pass stool. It may be possible to pass some stool, but abdominal pain is still present, and any stool that is passed is hard or small. Normal bowel movements vary from person to person, so not all cases are similar. However, if there is a lack of bowel movements, for as long as three days or more, the situation becomes more serious.
Diarrhea is the opposite. Stools are thin, loose or even watery, and diarrhea can be the result of multiple causes. Many people will experience diarrhea a few times within a year, some more than others. This may be due to having a “stomach flu”, or a virus in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Other times, if a patient was suffering from constipation, they may have diarrhea afterwards.
Both constipation and diarrhea are signs of a digestive disorder. Aside from constipation and diarrhea, other signs of a digestive disorder weight loss, gas, and changes in appetite. If a patient is suffering from a digestive problem, there may be more involved.
Causes & Symptoms
Constipation and diarrhea have similar, and different, causes and symptoms. So, it can be confusing to determine what the real reason is. Something to keep in mind, though, is these conditions affect the body’s digestive system, and they can be due to a spinal subluxation putting pressure on certain nerves.
For similarities, signs of constipation and diarrhea include feeling bloated, maybe gassy, along with needing to have a bowel movement. Both can be the result of overusing laxatives and/or a thyroid issue. The thyroid is a small gland found in the base of the neck and is a well-known gland in the body’s endocrine system. The two most notable hormones produced in the thyroid are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Concerning these conditions and the thyroid, constipation is often associated with those dealing with hypothyroidism (when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroxine), while diarrhea is with hyperthyroidism (when the thyroid produces too much thyroxine).
Now, let’s focus on their differences, starting with constipation. Since constipation occurs due to fewer than normal bowel movements, patients will feel as if not everything came out, and they will be straining to make that happen. This can be due to not being active, feeling stressed, and even resisting any urge to go. Other causes include eating disorders, pregnancy, colon cancer, any neurological conditions, and certain medications.
Diarrhea, on the other hand, can make a person feel nauseous, to the point of needing to throw up. This can be due to diarrhea being connected to a virus in the gut, also called a “stomach flu”. Eating certain foods that upset the stomach, or that result in allergic reactions, and even intestinal diseases are other possibilities to consider; that is, in the case of feeling nauseous. Diarrhea can occur after constipation as well, especially if a patient suffers from IBS. Other causes include certain cancers, alcohol abuse, surgery on the digestive system, and malabsorption (when the body has trouble absorbing certain nutrients).
With these conditions, there are symptoms that can indicate more serious problems in the body. If there is any blood or mucus in the stool, severe pain, sudden weight loss, or a patient is seriously dehydrated, professional medical attention is critical.
How Chiropractic Care Helps
When constipation/ diarrhea occurs, there is an imbalance in the body. Regarding the Zone Technique, this imbalance can be found in two prominent systems: Zone 2 (the elimination system) and Zone 4 (the digestive system).
Zone 2 works to “eliminate” and flush out waste and toxins in the body. If it is not working properly, the body could absorb harmful bacteria and particles. This can lead to suffering from a virus, and the body tries to figure out how to fix the situation. With additional stress, particularly on the spinal cord, communication between the brain, nerves, and specific organs – primarily the intestines and colon – is affected. This miscommunication results in malfunction of Zone 2 organs and conditions, such as constipation and diarrhea.
Zone 4 is another common zone connected to these conditions. This zone is the body’s internal engine, breaking down food and liquids to be used as energy. As such, when there is an imbalance in this zone, nutrients are not being absorbed properly, and proper nerve communication is disrupted. Because the body is working to fix the problem, digestion falls lower on the priority list, resulting in complications and symptoms. Digestion issues, including IBS and bowel issues, are perfect examples.
Another zone that can be affected, though not as often, is Zone 3. This zone is the body’s nervous system, the “electrical wiring”, and it is considered the master balancing system in the human body. If this zone is unbalanced, not only is nerve communication affected, but so is a person’s sleep pattern, emotional state, and diet. Concerning constipation and diarrhea, poor diet choices can lead to indigestion, allergic reactions, and decreases in proper nutrient absorption.
Chiropractic care helps with such cases through gentle manipulation of the spine, to alleviate pain and stress on the spinal cord. Once the pressure decreases, proper nerve communication will be re-established, and the zones begin to function better. As the zones come back online, the body begins to work appropriately again, which can lead to less occurrences of conditions like constipation and diarrhea.
Constipation/ Diarrhea Relief - Treatment at Diamond Chiropractic
At Diamond Chiropractic in Omaha, our chiropractor will perform an examination, take x-rays, and evaluate your posture to determine the cause of your constipation/diarrhea. After comparing the findings and confirming the diagnosis, our chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help alleviate your symptoms, heal the pain, and provide you with recommendations to lower your risk for possible re-occurrences.
Dr. Nilles will realign the vertebrae in the affected area to increase your range of motion and alleviate the pain on the spinal nerves. He will focus on the imbalanced zone(s) connected to your case and begin treatment from there. You will notice a change in your bowel movements within hours of seeing the doctor. Symptoms resulting from the pain, from other nerves in the affected area, may begin to decrease as well.
Intersegmental traction involves the use of a special chiropractic table. This specific table includes rollers that will roll along the sides of the spinal column, allowing blood to flow through the tight muscles and ligaments. As this occurs, the muscles and ligaments loosen up and relax more; in addition, your spine will become more mobile. This type of treatment is effective with alleviating pain from constipation/ diarrhea.
Electro-therapy, or acupuncture, is effective with constipation and diarrhea, and their symptoms. This is achieved through targeting certain acupuncture points during treatment, as well as an electro-muscle stimulator during therapy. Patients will notice, after several treatments, the pain in the injured area(s) begin to decrease. In addition, they will start to see more mobility come back to their spine and other affected areas of the body.
With any injury, whether to the back, neck, or extremity, the last thing you want to do is make the pain worse. The same idea applies to handling cases of constipation/diarrhea. Our advice is designed to help you perform everyday tasks and responsibilities safely. This does include suggestions to improving your diet, drinking plenty of water and fluids, and exercising. At Diamond Chiropractic, we focus on healing and relief from constipation and diarrhea, not aggravating the pain further.
