Acid Reflux Treatment from your Chiropractor in Omaha - Diamond Chiropractic
This may sound familiar. You are enjoying the day when you begin feeling a burning sensation around your stomach and lower chest area. The sensation continues up to your throat, making you feel nauseated. Maybe you had a big meal a few hours ago, and maybe you just took a nap after that meal. You think you are experiencing a bit of heartburn; but it is, in fact, your stomach. You are experiencing acid reflux.
Almost everyone has had some experience with acid reflux at least once. Those who experience frequent acid reflux episodes in a week may be dealing with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Regardless of the case, everyone knows it’s not a fun affair; and it can point to an underlining problem in the body.
Our team at Diamond Chiropractic is exceptional when it comes to acid reflux/GERD. Regardless if you have had this condition for a while and it’s getting worse (known as a “chronic” condition), or it just appeared today (known as an “acute” condition), our chiropractor in Omaha has the answer and treatment for you.
How Acid Reflux & GERD Differ
Typically, acid reflux occurs after eating food or drinking a beverage, which travels from the mouth to the stomach through a tube known as the esophagus. As the food or beverage enters the stomach, a small “valve” of muscle fibers closes to prevent stomach contents from traveling back up. This “valve” is known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). When the LES doesn’t work properly, the stomach contents can travel back into the esophagus, causing acid reflux.
GERD is believed to occur because there is too much or too little acid in the stomach. In truth… it is too confusing to clarify the exact cause behind it. What we do understand is this condition is serious. Mild cases of GERD occur at least twice a week, while moderate to severe cases occur at least once a week.
The difference between acid reflux and GERD is the frequency and severity of the case. Acid reflux can occur occasionally. GERD is due to several reflux incidents within one week. Both can be managed with diet, lifestyle changes, and over-the-counter medications; however, those with GERD may need further medical attention.
Causes & Symptoms
With acid reflux, the enzymes and acids from the stomach are powerful enough to cause inflammation, burning, and irritation to the esophagus. This can, in turn, damage the sensitive tissue in the esophagus, and even cause cancer in certain individuals.
However, it is difficult to explain the exact cause of acid reflux. Each person is different, which applies to how a person may experience this condition. Additionally, it could be brought on by a combination of causes, such as having poor posture and stress. Possible causes/factors that could result in acid reflux/GERD include:
Obesity, which can be linked to poor eating habits and a poor diet.
Certain prescription medications
Hiatal hernia, a condition where part of the stomach protrudes into the chest area through a small opening in the diaphragm.
Symptoms of acid reflux, though, are more recognizable, and they are common throughout many people. Typical symptoms associated with acid reflux/GERD consist of:
Burning pain in the chest, other than heartburn
Feeling that the esophagus is blocked, that your throat is blocked, or like you’re choking Acidic taste in your mouth
Acid Reflux/ GERD Treatment at Diamond Chiropractic
At Diamond Chiropractic in Omaha, our chiropractor will perform an examination, take x-rays, and evaluate your posture to determine a cause for your acid reflux/GERD, and its symptoms. After comparing the findings and confirming the diagnosis, our chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help alleviate your symptoms, heal the condition, and provide you with recommendations to lower your risk for possible re-occurrences.
Dr. Nilles will realign the vertebrae in the affected area to increase your range of motion and alleviate the pain on the spinal nerve. Symptoms resulting from this, and from other nerves in the affected area, may begin to decrease as well.
Intersegmental traction involves the use of a special chiropractic table. This specific table includes rollers that will roll along the sides of the spinal column, allowing blood to flow through the tight muscles and ligaments. As this occurs, the muscles and ligaments loosen up and relax more; in addition, your spine will become more mobile. This type of treatment is effective with healing acid reflux/GERD.
Electro-therapy, or acupuncture, is effective with acid reflux and the symptoms. Patients will notice, after several treatments, any muscle spasms they experienced from acid reflux begin to decrease. The intense pain patients had prior will start lowering as well, and they will start to see more mobility come back to their spine, along with any other affected areas of the body.
With any condition, the last thing you want to do is make the pain worse. The same idea applies to healing acid reflux/GERD. Our advice is designed to help you perform everyday tasks and responsibilities safely. We focus on healing and relief from acid reflux/GERD, not aggravating it further.
