Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux Treatment

This may sound familiar. You are enjoying the day when you begin feeling a burning sensation in your stomach region. The sensation continues up to your throat making you feel nauseated. Maybe you had a big meal a 1-2 hours ago and then took a nap. It’s also possible that eating too close to bed time creates this condition. You think you are experiencing a bit of heartburn. But you are actually experiencing acid reflux.

Almost everyone has had some experience with acid reflux at least once. Those who experience frequent acid reflux episodes in a week may be dealing with gastroesophageal reflux disease called GERD. Regardless it’s not a fun time. These symptoms point to an underlining problem in the body.

Our team at Diamond Chiropractic is exceptional when it comes to acid reflux.

How Acid Reflux & GERD Differ

Acid reflux usually occurs after eating food or drinking a beverage. The food travels from the mouth to the stomach through a tube known as the esophagus. As the food or beverage enters the stomach, a small “valve” of muscle fibers closes to prevent stomach contents from traveling back up. This valve is known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). When the valve doesn’t close properly, the stomach contents can travel back into the esophagus causing acid reflux.

GERD is believed to occur because there is too much or too little acid in the stomach. It is too confusing to clarify the exact cause behind it. What we do understand is this condition is serious. Mild cases of GERD occur at least twice a week, while moderate to severe cases occur at least once a week.

The difference between acid reflux and GERD is the frequency and severity of the case. Acid reflux can occur occasionally. GERD is due to several reflux incidents within one week. Both can be managed with diet, lifestyle changes, and proper chiropractic adjustments. GERD may need further medical attention.

Causes & Symptoms

With acid reflux, the enzymes and acids from the stomach are powerful enough to cause inflammation, burning, and irritation to the esophagus. This can, in turn, damage the sensitive tissue in the esophagus, and even cause cancer in certain individuals.

However, it is difficult to explain the exact cause of acid reflux. Each person may experience this condition differently. Additionally, it could be brought on by a combination of causes, such as having poor posture and stress. Possible causes/factors that could result in acid reflux include:

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Hiatal hernia

Symptoms of acid reflux, though, are more recognizable, and they are common throughout many people. Typical symptoms associated with acid reflux/GERD consist of:

  • Heartburn
  • Burning pain in the chest, other than heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Feeling that the esophagus is blocked

Acid Reflux/ GERD Treatment at Diamond Chiropractic

At Diamond Chiropractic in Omaha, our chiropractor will perform an examination, take x-rays, and evaluate your posture to determine a cause for your acid reflux/GERD. After comparing the findings and confirming the diagnosis, our chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help alleviate your symptoms.

Spinal Adjustments

Dr. Nilles will realign the vertebrae in the affected area to increase your range of motion. This alignment will alleviate the pain in the spinal nerves. Symptoms resulting from this pressure may begin to decrease as well.

Intersegmental Traction

Intersegmental traction involves the use of a special chiropractic table. This specific table includes rollers that will roll along the sides of the spinal column allowing blood to flow through the tight muscles and ligaments.  This type of treatment is effective with healing acid reflux by stimulating certain acupuncture points.

Acupuncture

Electro-therapy, or acupuncture, is effective with acid reflux and the symptoms. Patients will notice any muscle spasms they experienced from acid reflux begin to decrease.
