FOOD ALLERGIES

Food Allergy Treatment from your Chiropractor in Omaha - Diamond Chiropractic

Sensitivities to food are becoming more common among adults and children. Today, more than 15 million Americans have some form of food intolerance, which includes every 1 in 13 children under the age of 18; and those numbers may continue to increase. These sensitivities to food can develop at any stage of life, though they usually appear during childhood and remain into adulthood.

Food allergies are the results of an immune system response to a certain food or ingredient, characterized by itching, facial and throat swelling, and difficulty with breathing. Intolerances, though caused by the same foods that result in allergic reactions, are less severe, with symptoms like bloating, stomach and intestinal pain, and headaches. Because both cases make a person feel extremely uncomfortable, or even sick, there can be some confusion between having a food allergy or intolerance.

Here at Diamond Chiropractic, our team is exceptionally when it comes to a food allergy/intolerance. Our staff is capable in understanding what the cause is and how to treat the pain caused, regardless of whether you have had this condition for a while (known as “chronic”) or it appeared suddenly (known as “acute”). Dr. Nilles, our chiropractor in Omaha, has the answer and treatment for you.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance

First, let’s review the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance. Because both can be caused by the same foods, as well as high stress and exhaustion, it can be difficult to tell the difference until it’s too late.

A food allergy is when the body’s immune system responds to a particular food, or to a particular ingredient in a food. The reactions in this case include itching, hives, swelling in the face and/or the throat, chest pain, difficult breathing, and blood pressure dropping quickly. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock can occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

A food intolerance is less severe. These cases often result in the person feeling bloated, having headaches and pain in their stomach and/or intestines. Additionally, people with a food intolerance can experience low back pain, arthritis-like symptoms, inflammation in the body and intestines, low energy levels, and difficulty with sleeping. For children, food intolerances can appear as mood fluctuations, difficulty with attention and concentration, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and even anxiety or depression. Although food intolerances are not always life-threatening, they can make a patient feel extremely uncomfortable or sick.

Regardless of whether a patient has a food allergy or intolerance, about 90% of food sensitivity cases are caused by the following: milk; eggs; peanuts; soy; wheat; and seafood, primarily shellfish (shrimp, oysters, lobsters, etc.). While there is no definitive cure for these allergies, there has been studies and research done focusing on food allergies/intolerances, and how they could develop.

How the Body Reacts

Much like seasonal allergies, the body will react to food allergies by releasing histamines. Histamines result in the body working hard to fight off “harmful” substances; histamines cause inflammation in the body and, in the case of food allergies/intolerances, on the skin. With a food allergy, histamine responses can cause symptoms consisting of swelling in the mouth and throat, lowered blood pressure, skin discoloration, and hives. These reactions appear quickly after eating the food/ ingredient, and they appear every time that specific food/ingredient is eaten. A small amount is enough to trigger signs of a food-related allergic reaction. Severe cases can result in anaphylaxis shock, if not medically treated immediately.

With food intolerances, the most common responses are bloating, gas and cramps, heartburn, and headaches. Irritability is another typical symptom of food intolerance, due to the histamines released in the body. Unlike food allergies, symptoms of food intolerance can take hours to surface, and there are times when the symptoms don’t appear at all. Patients with food intolerances may have to eat the food/ingredient a lot before any symptoms begin appearing.

While some symptoms are common and easily identifiable, others are less noticeable. In addition, symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea appear in ALL cases of food sensitivities. Aside from the presence of food in the body, another reason for the immune system to release histamines is from a spinal subluxation. Subluxations cause miscommunication between the brain and the nervous system, between the brain center and the rest of the body. Subluxations can stem from several stressors placed on the body: physical, emotional, and biochemical. In the case of food sensitivities, histamines are released due to a biochemical stressor, leading to the body reacting to certain foods we eat.

Food Allergy/Intolerance – Treatment at Diamond Chiropractic

At Diamond Chiropractic in Omaha, our chiropractor will perform an examination, take x-rays, and evaluate your posture to determine the cause of food allergy/intolerance reactions. After comparing the findings and confirming the diagnosis, our chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help alleviate your symptoms, heal the pain, and provide you with recommendations to lower your risk for possible re-occurrences.

Spinal Adjustments

Dr. Nilles will realign the vertebrae in the affected area to increase your range of motion and alleviate the pain on the spinal nerves. With the adjustments, inflammation in the digestive system will decrease and lead to better functionality. Stimulation of the cells and organs, due to food sensitivities, will also decrease. Along with better mobility in the spine, your digestive system will work more effectively again.

Intersegmental Traction

Intersegmental traction involves the use of a special chiropractic table. This specific table includes rollers that will roll along the sides of the spinal column, allowing blood to flow through the tight muscles and ligaments. As this occurs, the muscles and ligaments loosen up and relax more; in addition, your spine will become more mobile. This type of treatment is effective with alleviating pain caused by food allergies/intolerances.

Acupuncture

Electro-therapy, or acupuncture, is effective with food allergies/intolerances by focusing on certain pressure points. Patients will notice, after several treatments, the pain and/or inflammationfrom food sensitivities begin to decrease. In addition, they will start to see more mobility come back to the spine and other affected areas.

Lifestyle Advice

When it comes to lifestyle advice, the main discussion point will be changing your daily diet. From a young age, many people will remember the original/traditional food pyramid. This placed a lot of complex carbohydrates (such as grains and rice) at the base, and sweets and oils would be at the very top. In other words, there was more focus on carbohydrates, while fruits, vegetables, and all the proteins got lost in the middle.

To correct this, revise your diet to be more low-carb, high-fat based; also known as the Keto diet. With this diet, your meals focus more on those proteins, fruits and vegetables being overlooked in the previous food pyramid; in addition, the carb/ sugar intake is reduced drastically. Meals should consist of 60-75% fats, 20-30% protein, and 5-10% carbs. Foods such as potatoes, high-carb/ dried fruit, and dairy should be avoided.

Reducing your sugar intake, along with modifying your diet, can result in having more energy and giving you control of your metabolism. Overall, a ketogenic diet could provide many health benefits for everyone.
